Virgilio Sieni held the “Gesture’s lectures” at the Feltrinelli Foundation at the beginning of 2019, my role has been to visually represent them live. In order to observe and paint simultaneously, I developed an action-painting practice, reaching an extreme synthesis that tends to abstraction, to make people feel rather than describe. The realization of the inks (hundreds of sketches) lasted a total of 10 hours (10 lectures), the selection and composition of the images, rearranged in the Feltrinelli Foundation publication “The minimal dictionary of gesture”, about 6 months.

The Awakening of Carnival is a work in three acts and an epilogue, through which Arianna Vairo interprets the archetype of the ritual in a personal way, drawing on its ancient dramaturgy, common to all the geographies that perform it, and which assumes from place to place specific and local characteristics. There are 16 figures, each on an independent sheet, all painted with “artisan” oil inks (dilutable with water) and watercolors, on paper in the size of 30 cm x 42 cm. The period of realization runs from December 17, 2020 (beginning of the Saturnalia), on February 16, 2021 (end of Carnival), in the year in which the ritual was banned by the pandemic, Arianna looked for it in the world of images.
